MadArt / Mad Campus proposal.

Sentinel: Site #1

Picture
When walking site #1 I felt the area was a little nondescript, considering it is one corner of the UW campus and a high traffic area for both pedestrians and automobiles. I wanted to activate the corner and create an alternate narrative to the street and sidewalks. The sculpture is positioned to peer out to the street and suggest a border.

The Sentinel is a  symbolic guard of imagination and curiosity, its form and conceptual roots draw from science, art and pop culture. It intentionally is imposing, but also intriguing, reflecting society's challenge of finding an equilibrium between privacy, safety, freedom and technology.

Materials:
Body:

Cardboard / main body of sculpture.
Wood /for interior skeleton
Hardware / nuts &  bolts and steel.

Exterior skin:
Adhesive vinyl / Holographic / fluorescent
Picture
Tools:
Portable hot glue gun.
Extra battery for screw gun.

Construction:
The sculpture will be created in components and skinned with the holographic film individually. Panels of components will be left open to secure to an internal wood frame. The sculpture will be secured to the ground by use of stakes concealed in the sculpture.

Flibberigibbets: Site #17

Picture
Flibbertigibbets are traditionally defined as talkative and or flighty persons. I intend the word in a joyful and whimsical way that defines the shapes more like animated gestures seemingly instantly frozen and at any moment able to continue bouncing and vibrating in an animated frenzy.

The sculptures’ placement and polygonal shapes will have an interesting relationship with Martin Puryear's sculpture Everything that Rises.

Commuter Site # 11

Picture
I placed this sculpture closer to the building on the inside of the fringe of the grass, close to the pathway. The sculpture’s figurative shapes and movement suggest it is about to round the curve. I thought of putting it in the middle of the field but I wanted the piece to be closer to where people are.
